Metro, 28 August 2007 'Synergy in Space' Kaveh Rahnama and Lauren Hendry have just graduated from The Circus Space and already have a show lined up at Hoxton Hall in December. Hendry, 21, had no previous circus experience but had trained in gymnastics. Rahnama, 27, studied English and Theatre at university and had experience in physical theatre, setting up his own company and performing in Edinburgh. Juggling aside, he had no gymnastics or circus skills but believes his professional background may have won him his place on the course.
'You need a certain technical ability,' he says, 'but The Circus Space seems very interested in potential.'
The couple met on the degree course, when partnered during acrobalance classes. During the third year of the course they joined forces to produce their required business plan, which was so good that it won them The Pyramid Award, a cash prize provided by The Circus Space in association with Deutsche Bank. The money has allowed them to form their own company and put their plan for a production into
action.
When asked how the Circus Arts degree compared with his English and Theatre degree, Rahnama doesn't heitate to say he found the course harder than anything he has done before. But, he adds, 'of everything I've done, it gives me the most.'
Observer, June 24th 2007 Two outstanding gymnasts, Lauren Hendry and Kaveh Rahnama are rehearsing their act (they will perform it at the end of this year as So & So Circus Theatre). At one point, Lauren is supposed to dive from Kaveh's shoulders. Her body, sensibly, refuses to do what is planned for it. Their Cuban teacher, Juan Carlos Leon Benitez, is on his knees praying theatrically: 'Do it please!' He makes Lauren laugh and she forces herself on. Later, the couple tell me about the patience needed for circus work and the ambition: 'You have to really want to do it,' they say. Kaveh loves what he does precisely because 'very few people can do it'. Lauren revels in it because: 'You get to play every day'.
Stage, 12 April 2007 When Lauren Hendry and Kaveh Rahnama's So & So Circus Theatre appeared with their dramatic hand to hand routine, Introducing...The Hot Dots, some real excitement was injected. They must have worked extremely hard to master the fast, daring leaps and lifts, performed with real attitude.
